![]() Suddenly you look like you’re lagging quite a bit behind and giving your players a much more narrow range of play and purchase options. Compare that to say, an imagined God of War 2 which will be sold separately as a $60 title at launch, not a part of PS Now, probably not streamed anywhere and definitely not released on PC with cross anything. It’s very likely we are heading into an era where some sort of subscription gets you say, Halo Infinite through Game Pass, where you can stream it on any device via xCloud, where you can also play it on PC with cross save and cross play. Sony also has to be concerned about Game Pass getting even more appealing as xCloud continues to grow. ![]() So if Sony could bite the bullet and come up with an equivalent that takes away that advantage, well, that could change the game quite a bit. If you go down and list the advantages and disadvantages between PlayStation and Xbox, the top of every list is probably going to be the existence of Xbox Game Pass working to Microsoft’s benefit. Yet it’s a conversation that has to be happening to some extent as we head into this new generation. God of War, Spider-Man, Horizon, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Bloodborne, these were all critical smash hits that resulted in millions of sales for Sony, and they have to weigh just how much benefit they’d be getting losing separate sales for these titles as opposed to putting them in PlayStation Now at launch to make it more like the Game Pass. And I think that’s one of the core reasons Sony is still holding back. Microsoft maintains they just want people to play their games wherever they can.Īnd of course, the common refrain is that Microsoft can afford to put its exclusives on Game Pass on day one because Microsoft’s exclusives are generally not as good as those from rivals PlayStation and Nintendo.Īt least this past generation, that’s certainly been true. Critics say that putting all exclusives on PC means that Microsoft has effectively killed the entire concept of an Xbox exclusive. Now, don’t get me wrong, there has been a good amount of pushback on Microsoft’s Game Pass decisions here. Sony relies heavily on selling separate copies of its exclusives. Usually not even close to launch, if they ever get there at all. Sony exclusives do not appear on PS Now at launch.
